Some people use December 5 to celebrate half of the 21st Amendment – section one which is the repeal of the 18th Amendment. I on the other hand join those in the know to celebrate the entire 21st Amendment. Specifically, section 2 and its statement putting states in charge of alcohol policy in the United States.
The transportation or importation into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is hereby prohibited.
I look forward to listening to what promises to be a very interesting webinar discussing alcohol policy and the United States Constitution on December 5th. The Center for Alcohol Policy is hosting a webinar on the 90th Anniversary of the passage of the 21st Amendment. The registration link can be found here. https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_U5uIMgLARxKZ7b6zm0v4Gg#/registration
This webinar will feature Brannon Denning, Center for Alcohol Policy Advisor and Associate Dean and Professor of Law at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law as well as Villanova Professor Mark Schrad, PH.D who is the author of a fascinating new book Smashing the Liquor Machine.
These gentlemen will discuss the history of both the 18th and 21st Amendment, the prohibition movements around the world, and what does the future hold for this amendment. 2023 is also the 90th anniversary of the publication of Toward Liquor Control which was critical in setting up alcohol regulation as states exercised their clarified powers under section two of the 21st Amendment. Both books make great holiday gifts!
I look forward to see you on the zoom and Happy 21st Amendment (especially section two) Day!
